Photoelectric  threshold  wavelength  for tungsten is 2300 A. Work function for it will be

    A)  5.38 eV

    B)  53.9 eV

    C)  \[5.39\times {{10}^{-8}}eV\]

    D)  None of these

    Correct Answer: A

    Solution :

                     Work function (W) is defined as the minimum energy required for emission of photo- electrons. It is equal to                                 \[W=\frac{hc}{\lambda }\] Given,   \[h=6.6\times {{10}^{-34}}J-s\],                 \[c=3\times {{10}^{9}}m/s\],                 \[\lambda =2300\,\overset{o}{\mathop{A}}\,=2300\times {{10}^{-10}}m\] \[\therefore \]  \[W=\frac{6.6\times {{10}^{-34}}\times 3\times {{10}^{8}}}{2300\times {{10}^{-10}}\times 1.6\times {{10}^{-19}}}\]                 = 5.38 eV
