    Gypsum is

    A)  \[CaS{{O}_{4}}.\,2{{H}_{2}}O\]

    B)  \[CaC{{O}_{3}}.\,2{{H}_{2}}O\]

    C)  \[CaS{{O}_{4}}.\,1/2{{H}_{2}}O\]

    D)  \[Si{{O}_{2}}\]

    Correct Answer: A

    Solution :

Gypsum is calcium sulphate dihydrate, i.e.,\[CaS{{O}_{4}}.\,2{{H}_{2}}O\]. It is used in the preparation of plaster of Paris. \[\underset{gypsum}{\mathop{CaS{{O}_{4}}\,.\,\,2{{H}_{2}}O}}\,\xrightarrow[{{125}^{o}}C]{\Delta }\]\[\underset{plaster\,\,of\,\,Paris}{\mathop{CaS{{O}_{4}}\,.\,\frac{1}{2}{{H}_{2}}O+}}\,1\frac{1}{2}{{H}_{2}}O\] Note - \[CaS{{O}_{4}}.\frac{1}{2}{{H}_{2}}0\] is calcium sulphate hemihydrate. It is used for making status, models, etc. It is also used in surgical bandages for fractured bones and for preparing chalks.
