Which of the following is a buffer?

    A)  \[N{{H}_{4}}OH+N{{H}_{4}}Cl\]

    B)                  \[NaOH+N{{a}_{2}}S{{O}_{4}}\]

    C)  \[NaOH+C{{H}_{3}}COONa\]

    D)  \[{{K}_{2}}S{{O}_{4}}+{{H}_{2}}S{{O}_{4}}\]

    Correct Answer: A

    Solution :

Key Idea A solution with reserve acidity or basicity is known as buffer. These are of two types (i) Acidic buffer solution A mixture of weak acid and its salt with strong base. Example : \[C{{H}_{3}}COOH+C{{H}_{3}}COONa\]. (ii) Basic buffer solution A mixture of weak base and its salt with strong acid. Example               \[N{{H}_{4}}OH+N{{H}_{4}}Cl\] \[N{{H}_{4}}OH+N{{H}_{4}}Cl\] is a basic buffer because it is a mixture of weak base and its salt with strong acid. \[NaOH+N{{a}_{2}}S{{O}_{4}}\] and \[NaOH+C{{H}_{3}}COONa\]are not buffer because in these mixture strong base is present. \[{{K}_{2}}S{{O}_{4}}+{{H}_{2}}S{{O}_{4}}\] is not a buffer due to the presence of strong acid.
