    Pollenkit material is secreted by

    A)  tapetum

    B)  endothecium

    C)  epidermis

    D)  endodermis

    Correct Answer: A

    Solution :

Pollenkit is an oily layer forming a thick viscous coating over the pollen grain surface of many insect pollinated species. The stickiness, odour and colour of the grains are because of the pollenkitt. Pollenkitt material is contributed by the tapetal cells and is later transferred to the pollen surface. It comprises chiefly of carotenoids or flavonoid pigments, which impart the characteristic yellow or orange colour to the pollen. The pollenkitt or the surface pollen cement also contains glycoprotein, lipids, glycolipids and monosa ccharides, which are responsible for its sticky nature. Endothecium is single layered, present in anther wall. It originates from the parietal layer and is present in the protuberant part of the anther. The cells of this wall are radially elongated and attains maximum development when anther is ready to dehisce for the discharge of pollen. The endothecial thickening contains a high proportion of \[\alpha \]-cellulose. Epidermis is the outermost cell layer of primary tissue of the plant. Endodermis is the innermost layer of cortex surrounding the vascular region and characterized by the presence of casparian strips in its anticlinal walls.
