    Significance of meiosis lies in

    A)                  reduction of chromosome number to one half

    B)                  maintaining constancy of chromosome number during sexual reproduction

    C)                  production of genetic variability

    D)                  All of the above

    Correct Answer: D

    Solution :

Meiosis is complicated cell division, which occurs in reproductive cells of sexually reproductive organism and reduces the number of chromosome to half. It was worked out by Strasburger in 1888 and the term was coined by Farmer and Moore (1905). Significances of meiosis (i) Reduction of chromosome number to half. (ii) It restore the original number of chromosomes in an individual. (iii) It provides an oppurtuniry to produce variations in the individual as a result of crossing over and the variations are the root cause of evolution. (iv) Failure of meiosis leads to the formation of diploid gametes, which on fusion form polyploids.
