Which combination of tissues acts together to provide the support to the hypocotyl of a seedling?

    A)                  Epidermis and collenchyma

    B)                  Xylem and parenchyma

    C)                  Epidermis and parenchyma

    D)                  Xylem and phloem fibres

    Correct Answer: A

    Solution :

Mechanical strength to hypocotyl is provided by epidermis and collenchyma. Xylem is a type of complex tissue, whose main function is conduction of water and mineral salts from root to the top of plant. Parenchyma is a simple permanent tissue. Cells of parenchyma are living and act as storage for food and water. Epidermis is the outermost layer of cells covering a plant. It is overlaid by a cuticle and its functions are principally to protect the plant from injury and to reduce water loss. Phloem fibres (bast fibres) are sclerenchymatous fibres having thick wall and narrow lumen. They provide mechanical support to the plant.
