    Hormone responsible for bolting is

    A)                  auxin

    B)                  gibberellins

    C)                  ethylene

    D)                  cytokinin

    Correct Answer: B

    Solution :

Gibberellins are weakly acidic growth hormones having Gibbane ring structure, which causes cell elongation of intact plant in genetically and increased intemodal length of genetically dwarfed plant. Gibberellin is known as bolting hormone, ie, it induces subapical meristem to develop faster, which causes elongation of reduced stem or bolting in case of rostte plants and root crops. Auxins are weakly acidic growth hormones having an unsaturated ring structure and capable of promoting cell elongation, especially of shoots. It is used as rooting hormone, for producing parthenocarpic fruit, as weedicids, inducing flowering etc. Ethylene is a gaseous hormone, which stimulates transverse or isodiametric growth but retards the longitudinal one. It aids in ripening of climacteric fruits, increases senescence activity, stimulates flowering etc. Cytokinins are basic in structure, either amino purine or phenyl urea derivatives that promotes cytokinesis, ie, cell division. It helps in morphogenesis, cell differentiation, delays senescence of leaves, overcome dormancy etc.
