Addition of \[SnC{{l}_{2}}\] to \[HgC{{l}_{2}}\] gives precipitate

    A)  white turning to red

    B)  white turning to grey

    C)  black turning to white

    D)  None of the above

    Correct Answer: B

    Solution :

Stannous chloride \[(SnC{{l}_{2}})\] is a good reducing agent. It reduces mercuric chloride \[(HgC{{l}_{2}})\]to white ppt. of mercurous chloride \[(H{{g}_{2}}C{{l}_{2}})\] and then reduces \[H{{g}_{2}}C{{l}_{2}}\] into grey ppt. of mercury. The following reaction takes place in two steps. \[SnC{{l}_{2}}+HgC{{l}_{2}}\xrightarrow{{}}SnC{{l}_{4}}+\underset{white\text{ }ppt.}{\mathop{H{{g}_{2}}C{{l}_{2}}\downarrow }}\,\] \[SnC{{l}_{2}}+H{{g}_{2}}C{{l}_{2}}\xrightarrow{{}}SnC{{l}_{4}}+\underset{grey\text{ }ppt.}{\mathop{2Hg\downarrow }}\,\] Therefore, addition of \[SnC{{l}_{2}}\] to \[HgC{{l}_{2}}\] gives white ppt. turning to grey ppt.
