    Acetals are

    A)  ketones

    B)  diethers

    C)  aldehyde

    D)  hydroxy aldehydes

    Correct Answer: B

    Solution :

Aldehyde react with alcohols in the presence of dry \[HCl\] to give gem-dialkoxy compounds. These compounds are called acetals, The addition of one molecule of alcohol to an aldehyde gives a hemiacetal. It is unstable compound and reacts further with another molecule of alcohol to form stable acetals.                 Note - Ketones do not form acetals with monohydric alcohol. They combine with diols to give cyclic to give cyclic ketals.
