Which of the following part of Funaria, sporophyte is involved in the dispersal of spores?

    A)  Calyptra

    B)  Operculum

    C)  Peristome

    D)  Annulus

    Correct Answer: C

    Solution :

Peristome lies under the operculum. It consists of two sets of long conical teeth, one within the other. The teeth of both the sets are on the same radii and thus opposite to each other. The peristome teeth close the opening of spore sac. They are attached at the base to the rim or the diaphragm. The outer set of teeth respond to the changes in humidity and thus are said to be hygroscopic and the inner peristome do not show hygroscopic movement. The peristome teeth by their hygroscopic movement caused gradual discharge of spores. Calyptra is the enlarged venter. The layer of cells that covers the sporophyte. Operculum is a cap-like structure formed the apical portion of the capsule. It regulates spore discharge. Annulus delimits the operculum from rest of the capsule.
