In Selaginella, the adaxial outgrowth, from the base of leaf, is called

    A)  ligule

    B)  velum

    C)  rhizophore

    D)  glossopodium

    Correct Answer: A

    Solution :

The leaves of Selaginella are microphyllous, sessile and simple. The vegetative as well as sporophyll has a small, membranous projection on their adaxial (upper) surface close to the base. This projection is known as ligule. The basal part of the ligule has a distinct hemispherical foot like structure called glossopodium. The ligule remains embedded at the base of leaf in a pit-like structure, called ligulae pit. Velum also known as annulus, is a ragged ring of tissue that remains on the stalk of a mushroom or toadstool. It is formed from the ruptured membrane that originally covered the lower surface of the cap. Rhizophores are long, unbranched and leafless structures arise from the lower side of the stem at the point of dichotomy. These grow vertically downward and bear adventitious roots at their distal end. They may develop into a typical leafy shoot under certain conditions.
