Apogamy is defined as the development of sporophyte from the gametophytic tissue without involving fusion of gametes. Such sporophyte grows vegetatively by budding from the gametophyte. Hence, they have the same level of ploidy as gametophytes. This process was first observed by Farlow (1874) in Pteris but the term was introduced by de Bary (1878). Apogamy is of two types.
