Foul smell in the water bodies of tanks, ponds etc., is due to

    A)  aerobiosis

    B)  anaerobiosis

    C)  psammophytes

    D)  biological magnification

    Correct Answer: B

    Solution :

Foul smell results due to decrease of oxygen in water and increase in \[C{{O}_{2}}\] level clearing the process of eutrophication which results due to addition of domestic waste, phosphate, nitrates etc from wastes or their decomposition product in water bodies, they become rich in nutrient, especially phosphate and nitrate ions. As a result of which water bodies become highly productive. Aerobiosis is phenomenon of aerobic respiration, ie, in presence of air. Psammophytes are those plants which grow on sandy soil. Biological Magnification is defined as increase in the concentration of a persistent chemical by the organism at successive trophic levels in a food chain.
