The retina of nocturnal birds contain

    A)  cones only

    B)  rods only

    C)  Both (a) and (b)

    D)  Either  or

    Correct Answer: B

    Solution :

The rods are longer slender and cylindrical and perceive variations in intensities in light and dark in dim light condition, eg, retina of owls contains only rods. That is why-owl sleep during day and hunt during night. Nocturnal animals possess only rods and lack cones. Cones are shorter, thicker and somewhat club shaped. They perceive objects and various colour in bright light, eg, retina of fowls contains only cones. Thus fowls sleep during night and feed during the day.
