The phenomena arising due to the superposition of waves is/are

    A)  beats

    B)  stationary waves

    C)   Lissajous figures

    D)  All of the above

    Correct Answer: D

    Solution :

When two identical transverse or longitudinal, progressive waves travel in a bounded medium with the same speed but in opposite directions, then by their superposition a new type of wave is produced which remains stationary in the medium, and is known as stationary wave. Beats When two sound waves of nearly equal frequencies are produced simultaneously then the intensity of resultant sound produced by their superposition increases and decreases alternatively with time. This phenomenon is known as beats. A Lissajous curve is the graph of the system of parametric equations  \[x=A\,\sin \,(at+\delta )\]and                \[y=B\,\sin \,(bt)\]formed by their superposition and frequency difference. Hence, all the three phenomenon beats, stationary waves and Lissajous figures arise due to the phenomenon of superposition.
