The phenomenon of radioactivity was discovered by

    A)  Henry Becquerel

    B)  Madam Curie

    C)  P. Curie

    D)  Rutherford

    Correct Answer: A

    Solution :

Radioactivity is the phenomenon of spontaneous disintegration of certain nuclei to form new elements with the emission of active radiation. They are called active as they affect photographic plates, and interact with electric and magnetic field. The radioactivity was discovered by Henry Becquerel in 1896 while investigating any possible relation between fluorescence and X-rays. Becquerel awarded Nobel prize for discovery of radioactivity. Madam Curie searched out number of other radioactive substances. P. Curie and Madam Curie investigated pitch blende mineral. They extracted radioactive elements polonium and radium. Rutherford concluded that there are two types of radiation ie, \[\alpha \] and \[\beta \]-rays carrying  different charges.
