                     Key Idea Compound which have \[C{{H}_{3}}-\underset{\begin{smallmatrix}  | \\  OH \end{smallmatrix}}{\mathop{C}}\,H-\]or \[C{{H}_{3}}-\overset{\begin{smallmatrix}  O \\  || \end{smallmatrix}}{\mathop{C}}\,-\] group give iodoform test positive. \[C{{H}_{3}}OH\] has not \[C{{H}_{3}}\underset{\begin{smallmatrix}  | \\  OH \end{smallmatrix}}{\mathop{C}}\,H-\] group hence, it does not give iodoform test. \[{{C}_{2}}{{H}_{5}}OH\] or \[C{{H}_{3}}-\overset{\begin{smallmatrix}  H \\  | \end{smallmatrix}}{\mathop{\underset{\begin{smallmatrix}  | \\  OH \end{smallmatrix}}{\mathop{C}}\,}}\,H\] has \[C{{H}_{3}}\underset{\begin{smallmatrix}  | \\  OH \end{smallmatrix}}{\mathop{C}}\,H-\] group hence, it gives iodoform test. \[C{{H}_{3}}COC{{H}_{3}}\] or \[C{{H}_{3}}-\overset{\begin{smallmatrix}  O \\  || \end{smallmatrix}}{\mathop{C}}\,-C{{H}_{3}}\]has \[C{{H}_{3}}-\overset{\begin{smallmatrix}  O \\  || \end{smallmatrix}}{\mathop{C}}\,-\]group hence, it also gives iodoform test. \[C{{H}_{3}}-\underset{\begin{smallmatrix}  | \\  OH \end{smallmatrix}}{\mathop{C}}\,-C{{H}_{3}}\] is also contain \[C{{H}_{3}}-\underset{\begin{smallmatrix}  | \\  OH \end{smallmatrix}}{\mathop{C}}\,-\] group hence, it gives the iodoform  test. Note - IN primary alcohol only \[{{C}_{2}}{{H}_{5}}OH\] gives iodororm test and in aldehyde only \[C{{H}_{3}}CHO\] gives iodoform test.
