The addition of 1% alcohol to chloroform acts as

    A)  auto-catalyst

    B)  bio-catalyst

    C)  positive catalyst

    D)  negative catalyst

    Correct Answer: D

    Solution :

The addition of 1% alcohol to chloroform acts as negative catalyst because in the presence of air and light chloroform oxidises into phosgene which is poisonous in nature. Therefore, a small quantity of alcohol is added to chloroform that retards its oxidation and also forms non-poisonous ethyl carbonate with \[COC{{l}_{2}}\]. \[\underset{chloroform}{\mathop{CHC{{l}_{3}}}}\,+\frac{1}{2}{{O}_{2}}\xrightarrow{air,\,\,light}\underset{phosgene}{\mathop{COC{{l}_{2}}}}\,+HCl\]                   ethyl carbonate \[\underset{\begin{smallmatrix}  phosgene \\  \left( carbonyl\text{ }chloride \right) \end{smallmatrix}}{\mathop{COC{{l}_{2}}}}\,\,\,\,+\,2{{C}_{2}}{{H}_{5}}OH\to \]\[\underset{ethyl\,\,carbonate}{\mathop{{{({{C}_{2}}{{H}_{5}}O)}_{2}}CO}}\,\]
