Which of the following alkenes is most reactive towards cationic polymerization?

    A)  \[C{{H}_{2}}=CHC{{H}_{3}}\]

    B)  \[{{H}_{2}}C=CHCl\]

    C)  \[{{H}_{2}}C=CH{{C}_{6}}{{H}_{5}}\]

    D)  \[{{H}_{2}}C=CHC{{O}_{2}}{{H}_{3}}\]

    Correct Answer: C

    Solution :

In cationic polymerization, carbocations are formed. Greater the stability of the carbocation, more reactive is the alkene. Since, the stability of the intermediate carbocation follows the order \[C{{H}_{3}}-CH{{C}_{6}}{{H}_{5}}>C{{H}_{3}}-CHC{{H}_{3}}>\]                 \[C{{H}_{3}}-CH-Cl>C{{H}_{3}}-\overset{+}{\mathop{C}}\,HC{{O}_{2}}C{{H}_{3}}\] Therefore, reactivity decreases in the same order. Thus, styrene is most reactive.
