One of the following is not the characteristic feature of cyanobacteria.

    A)  They are multicellular

    B)  They form colonies

    C)  They form blooms in polluted water bodies

    D)  They can fix atmospheric nitrogen

    Correct Answer: A

    Solution :

Cyanobacteria is a phylum consisting of two groups of photosynthetic eubacteria (Cyanophyta or Chloroxybacteria). They are unicellular but sometimes become joined in colonies or filaments by a sheath of mucilage. They occur in all aquatic habitats. A few species fix atmospheric nitrogen and thus, contribute to soil fertility. In eutrophic warm ponds and lakes, certain cyanobacteria can reproduce rapidly to form blooms.
