AMU Medical AMU Solved Paper-2012

  • question_answer
Forces generated by transpiration can create pressure sufficient to lift water even upto height of

    A)  130 feet

    B)  130 metre

    C)  230 feet

    D)  230 metre

    Correct Answer: B

    Solution :

Transpiration pull results from the evaporation of water from the surfaces of cells in the leaves. This evaporation causes the surface of the water to recess into the pores of the cell wall. By capillary action the water forms concave menisci (meniscus = curved upper surface of a liquid in a tube) inside the pores. The high surface tension of water pulls the concavity outwards, generating enough force to lift water as high as 100-130 metres from ground level to a trees highest branches.
