  • question_answer
Given the reaction for the discharge of a cobalt-cadmium battery \[2Co{{(OH)}_{3}}+Cd+2{{H}_{2}}O\xrightarrow{{}}\]\[2Co{{(OH)}_{2}}+Cd{{(OH)}_{2}}\] What species is oxidised during the discharge of the battery?

    A)  \[C{{o}^{3+}}\]

    B)  \[C{{o}^{2+}}\]

    C)  Cd

    D)  \[C{{d}^{2+}}\]

    Correct Answer: C

    Solution :

During discharge of a cobalt-cadmium battery, following reaction takes place at anode.       \[Cd(s)+2O{{H}^{-}}(aq)\xrightarrow{{}}Cd{{(OH)}_{2(e)}}+2{{e}^{-}}\]  Due to removed of \[{{e}^{-}}\] from , it is oxidised.
