    Carotid labyrinth contains

    A)  olfactoreceptors

    B)  baroreceptors

    C)   chemoreceptors

    D)  phonoreceptors

    Correct Answer: B

    Solution :

In frog, carotid arch divides into two unequal branches ie, (i) smaller and superficially situated external carotid artery and (ii) larger and deeper internal carotid artery. The external carotid supplies blood to tongue and hyoid. The internal carotid is swollen at its base forming an oval spongy mass of non contractile fibro-elastic tissue called carotid labyrinth. Presumably, labyrinth is a sensory organ to detect blood pressure in the artery hence called baroreceptor. The internal carotid anery supplies blood to head region.
