Consider the following statements (1) Cutin is a fatty acid polymer (2) Starch is a fatty acid polymer (3) Sucrose is monosaccharide (4) Maltose is polymer of fructose

    A)  1,2 and 3 are correct.

    B)  1 and 2 are correct.

    C)  2 and 4 are correct.

    D)  1 and 3 are correct.

    Correct Answer: B

    Solution :

In plants, the epidermal cells secrete a waxy substance called cutin (a fatty acid polymer), which forms a layer of variable thickness called the cuticle within and on the outer surface of the cell wall. It protects the epidermis from mechanical injuries and prevents from loss of water. Starch (exists in plants) is a mixture of unbranched amylose (glucose residues joined by \[\alpha 1\to \alpha 4\] bonds) and branched amylopectin (glucose residues joined by \[\alpha 1\to \alpha 4\] but with some \[\alpha 1\to \alpha 6\] branch points).
