Reduction of aldehydes and ketones into hydrocarbons using hydraiene and sodium ethoxide is called

    A)  Clemmensen reduction

    B)  Cope reduction

    C)   Dow reduction

    D)  Wolff-Kishner reduction

    Correct Answer: D

    Solution :

Carbonyl group is reduced to alkyi group by means either Clemmensen reduction\[(Zn-Hg/HCl)\]or Wolff-Kishner reduction.\[(N{{H}_{2}}N{{H}_{2}}/{{C}_{2}}{{H}_{5}}ONa\]. Here carbonyl groups is reduced by using hydrazine and sodium ethoxide, thus it is an example of Wolff-Kishner reduction.
