The correct statement about antibodies is (1) antibodies are produced by lymphocytes (2) antibodies are carbohydrate molecules (3) antibody consists of two heavy chains and two light chains (4) characterized by the presence of antigenic determinant site

    A)  1, 2 and 3 are correct

    B)  1 and 2 are correct

    C)  2 and 4 are correct

    D)  1 and 3 are correct

    Correct Answer: D

    Solution :

An antibody is a protein molecule generated in the living body in response to the presence of an antigen. They are generated by B-lymphocytes and plasma cells. Basically, each antibody molecule is a \[\text{ }\!\!'\!\!\text{ Y }\!\!'\!\!\text{ }\] shaped protein molecule having two identical halves. Each half contains a heavy (\[\text{H}\]) and a light (\[\text{L}\]) chain, which are concerned to each other by disulphide bonds. Antigenic determinants or epitopes are those sites on antigens, which are recognised by antibodies and receptors present on T and B-cells.
