During sperm interaction into the ovum, various metabolic activities take place, eg, permeability of plasma membrane of ovum becomes increased and rate of protein synthesis also increases. Immediately after the sperm has penetrated into the ovum, the vitelline membrane or zona pellucida is lifted, thickened and hardened and thus converted into fertilization membrane which prevents polyspermy. Fertilizin is present in the surface layer of egg. while antifertilizin is present in the surface layer of cytoplasm of spermatozoa.
