Directions : In the following question more than one of the answers given may be correct. Select the correct answer and mark it according to the code:

Link between glycolysis, Kreb's cycle or \[\text{ }\!\!\beta\!\!\text{ -}\] oxidation of fatty acid or carbohydrate and fat metabolism is (1) acetyl Co-A (2) a compound fanned by oxidarive decarboxylation (3) a 2-carbon compound (4) oxaloacetic acid

    A)  1, 2 and 3 are correct

    B)  1 and 2 are correct

    C)  2 and 4 are correct

    D)  1 and 3 are correct

    Correct Answer: A

    Solution :

Before entering the Kreb's cycle, pyruvic acid (a 3-C compound formed by glycolysis) is converted into acetyl Co-A (a 2-C compound) by the process of oxidative decarboxylation. The reaction occurs as follows: \[\underset{\text{3}\,\,\text{C}}{\mathop{\text{Pyruvic}\,\text{acid}\,\text{+}\,\text{Co-}\,\text{A}\,\text{+}\,\text{NAD}}}\,\xrightarrow[\text{Lippic}\,\text{acid}]{\text{TPP,}\,\text{M}{{\text{g}}^{\text{2+}}}}\]\[\underset{\text{(2C)}}{\mathop{\text{Acetyl}\,\text{Co-}\,\text{A}\,\text{+}\,\text{NAD}{{\text{H}}_{\text{2}}}\,\text{+C}{{\text{o}}_{\text{2}}}}}\,\] This reaction is commonly known as gateway- step or link reaction and acetyl Co-A (2-C compound formed by oxidative decarboxylation) is called, connecting link between glycolysis and Krebs' cycle.
