Identify the correctly matched pair with reference to plant tissue culture. (1) Embryoids      ? Non-zygotic embryos produced from somatic cells (2) Meristem culture ? Sterile triploid, seedless fruits (3) Pollen culture    ? Haploid production (4) Embryo rescue   ? Virus free clonal plants

    A)  1, 2 and 3 are correct

    B)  1 and 2 are correct

    C)  2 and 4 are correct

    D)  1 and 3 are correct

    Correct Answer: A

    Solution :

Embryoids are non-zygotic or somatic embryo-like structures, which are produced through in vitro culture and have the ability to form fully fledged plants. Sterile triploid and seedless fruits can be produced with the help of meristem culture, eg, banana. Haploid plants may be obtained from pollen grains by placing anthers or isolated pollen grains on a suitable culture medium. This constitutes anther culture or pollen culture respectively. The technique of growing immature embryos is termed as embryo rescue. Shoot apical meristem is a virus free tissue hence, meristem culture is used for the production of virus-free plants.
