Directions : In the following question more than one of the answers given may be correct. Select the correct answer and mark it according to the code:

A body of mass 2 kg moving with a speed of 3 m/s collides with a body of mass 1 kg moving with a speed of 4 m/s. If the collision is one dimensional and completely inelastic the speed of composite mass after the collision may be (1)\[\frac{3}{2}\]m/s                                      (2) \[\frac{2}{3}\]m/s (3) 4 m/s                              (4)\[\frac{10}{3}\]m/s

    A)   1, 2 and 3 are correct

    B)  1 and 2 are correct

    C)   2 and 4 are correct

    D)  1 and 3 are correct

    Correct Answer: C

    Solution :

                     If\[{{v}_{1}}\]and\[{{v}_{2}}\]are in same direction then \[{{v}_{comp}}=\frac{{{m}_{1}}{{v}_{1}}+{{m}_{2}}{{v}_{2}}}{{{m}_{1}}+{{m}_{2}}}=\frac{2\times 3+1\times 4}{2+1}\]                                 \[=\frac{10}{3}m/s\] However, if\[{{v}_{1}}\]and\[{{v}_{2}}\]are in mutually opposite directions. Then                 \[{{v}_{comp}}=\frac{2\times 3+1\times (-4)}{2+1}=\frac{2}{3}m/s\]
