Energy transferred from one trophic level to another is :

    A)  5%

    B)  10%

    C)   15%

    D)  20%

    Correct Answer: B

    Solution :

As per "10% law" in an ecosystem all energy is provided by Sun through photosynthesis. All of the energy stored by the autotrophs in the form of food is not available to the herbivores as food. Herbivores can store only 10% of this energy in their biomass and 90% is used in life activities. These herbivores are eaten by carnivores and carnivores by top carnivores. Thus only 10% of energy is captured by the organism of next higher trophic level. This 10% law was given by Lindeman. Energy flow in an ecosystem is always unidirectional and in decreasing order. So pyramid of energy is always upright.
