Which of the following is secondary pollutant:

    A)  NO

    B)  \[N{{O}_{2}}\]

    C)  \[S{{O}_{2}}\]

    D)  PAN

    Correct Answer: D

    Solution :

On the basis of form in which the pollutants persist after release into the environment pollutants are of two types :  Primary pollutants : These persist after release into the environment in the form in which they are added to the environment, e.g., \[NO,\text{ }DOT,\text{ }N{{O}_{2}}{{N}_{2}}O.\]  Secondary pollutants : These are formed by reaction amongst the primary pollutants, e.g.. Nitrogen oxide and hydrocarbons react in the presence of sunlight to form two secondary pollutants, i.e., PAN (Peroxyaceryl Nitrate) and ozone. Secondary pollutants are more toxic than the primary pollutants.
