When electrons are trapped into the crystal in anion vacancy, the defect is known as:

    A)  Schottky defect

    B)  Frenkel defect

    C)   stoichiometric defect

    D)  F-centres

    Correct Answer: D

    Solution :

Stoichiometric defect? These are imperfections in crystals in which the ratio of cations and anions remain same as represented by molecular formula. Schottky defect? When equal number of cations and anions are missing from an ionic crystal it is called Schottky defect. Frenkel?s defect? When an ion is missing from its position in lattice and occupies the interstitial site, electrical neutrality and stoichiometry of compound is maintained. This is called Frenkel?s defect. F centres? When ah anion is missing from its site and its position is taken by electron to maintain electrical balance, the electron thus trapped in anion vacancy is called F centre. The F centres are responsible for imparting colours to crystal.
