The speed of sound in hydrogen at NTP is 1270 m/s. Then, the speed in a mixture of hydrogen and oxygen in the ratio 41 by volume will be

    A)  317 m/s

    B)  635 m/s

    C)  830 m/s

    D)  950 m/s

    Correct Answer: B

    Solution :

As total energy remains conserved in SHM, hence when U is maximum in SHM,\[K=0,\]ie, E is also equal to\[{{U}_{\max }},ie,{{U}_{\max }}=E={{K}_{0}}\] As given, the volumes of hydrogen and oxygen in a mixture is 4 1, so let V be the volume of oxygen. The volume of hydrogen will be 4 V. If\[{{\rho }_{m}}\]be the density of mixture, then                 \[{{\rho }_{m}}=\frac{4V\times 1+V\times 16}{5V}=4\] As           \[v\propto {{\left( \frac{1}{\rho } \right)}^{1/2}}\] \[\therefore \]Velocity in mixture\[=\frac{1270}{{{(4)}^{1/2}}}=635\text{ }m/s\]
