The correct order of basic strengths in benzene solution is

    A) \[C{{H}_{3}}N{{H}_{2}}>{{(C{{H}_{3}})}_{2}}NH>{{(C{{H}_{3}})}_{3}}N\]

    B) \[{{(C{{H}_{3}})}_{2}}NH>{{(C{{H}_{3}})}_{3}}N>C{{H}_{3}}N{{H}_{2}}\]

    C) \[{{(C{{H}_{3}})}_{3}}N>C{{H}_{3}}N{{H}_{2}}>{{(CH{{  }_{3}})}_{2}}NH\]

    D) \[{{(C{{H}_{3}})}_{3}}N>{{(C{{H}_{3}})}_{2}}NH>C{{H}_{3}}N{{H}_{2}}\]

    Correct Answer: D

    Solution :

Alkyl group are electron donating groups, as a result, the electron density on the nitrogen atom increases which facilitate the donation of lone pair of electron and hence, basic character increases. As number of Alkyl group attached on nitrogen increases basic character will increases. In benzene stabilisation of the conjugate acid due to H-bonding are absent and hence, in these the basicity of amines depends only on the +7 effect of the alkyl group. Thus, basicity of amine in benzene solution follows the order?\[3{}^\circ \text{ }amine\text{ }>\text{ }2{}^\circ \text{ }amine\text{ }>\text{ }1{}^\circ \text{ }amine\].
