The energy-releasing process in which the substrate is oxidised without an external electron acceptor is called

    A)  fermentation

    B)  photorespiration

    C)   aerobic respiration

    D)  glycolysis

    Correct Answer: D

    Solution :

Glycolysis is the first stage of breakdown of glucose in cytoplasm of cell without using oxygen (electron acceptor). It is a stepwise process in which one molecule of glucose breaks into two molecule of pyruvic acid and net gain of energy is 2 ATP and 2 \[NAD{{H}_{2}}\]molecules. The stepwise breakdown of respiratory substrates to \[C{{O}_{2}}\]and \[{{H}_{2}}O\]in presence of oxygen is referred as aerobic respiration. It is a catabolic process and generates large amount  of energy to form ATP. Anaerobic respiration in microorganisms is called fermentation. Alcoholic fermentation is the breakdown of glucose into ethyl alcohol and \[C{{O}_{2}}\]in presence of enzymes of microorganism.
