Palmella stage is observed in :

    A)                  Ulothrix

    B)                  Spirogyra and Riccia

    C)                  Chlamydomonas

    D)  Chara and Riccia

    Correct Answer: C

    Solution :

Palmella stage is formed in Chlamydomonas. Under unfavourable condition of growth the motile cells becomes non-motile through the loss of flagella. Its protoplast divides longitudinally several times to form about 2-16 daughter protoplast. The wall of the parent cell as well as that of the daughter protoplasts continue gelatinisation to produce mucilagenous naked daughter protoplast. Under favourable conditions of water and light the daughter protoplasts develop flagella and cell wall and grow into mature individuals. Ulothrix is a green algae. Asexual reproduction takes place through 200 spore formation. Spirogyra is a green algae. Asexual reproduction takes place through akinete formation. Riccia is a bryophytes in which vegetative reproduction occurs through fragmentation and tubers and sexual reproduction occurs through fusion of male and female gametes.
