The least soluble alcohol in water is:

    A) \[C{{H}_{3}}OH\]

    B)  \[{{C}_{2}}{{H}_{5}}OH\]

    C) \[{{C}_{3}}{{H}_{7}}OH\]

    D)  \[{{C}_{4}}{{H}_{9}}OH\]

    Correct Answer: D

    Solution :

All the alcohols have water repelling (alkyl or R) part and water attracting (OH) part. As the molecular mass increases percentage of water repelling alkyl part increases and that of water attracting part remains constant. Therefore, solubility of alcohols decreases with molecular mass. \[\therefore \]\[{{C}_{4}}{{H}_{9}}OH\]has lowest solubility in water because it has the highest molecular mass
