BHU PMT BHU PMT Solved Paper-2003

  • question_answer
The length, breadth and thickness of a block are given by \[l=12\,\,cm\], \[b=6\,cm\] and \[t=2.45\,\,cm\]. The volume of the block according to the idea of significant figures should be:             [BHU M-2003]

    A)  \[1\times {{10}^{2}}\,\,c{{m}^{3}}\]

    B)  \[2\times {{10}^{2}}\,\,c{{m}^{3}}\]

    C)   \[1.763\times {{10}^{2}}\,\,c{{m}^{3}}\]

    D)  none of the above

    Correct Answer: B

    Solution :

Key Idea: The result is rounded off to least number of significant figures in the given measurement \[\,i.e.,\]1 (in 6 cm). In the measured value of the physical quantity, the digits about the correctness of which we are sure plus the last digit which is doubtful are called significant figures. Volume of block                                                               \[V=lbh\]                                                   \[=12\times 6\times 2.45\]                                                 \[=1.764\times {{10}^{2}}\,c{{m}^{3}}\] In the process involving multiplication the number of significant figures in the result corresponds to minimum number of significant figures in \[b=6\,\,cm\] which is 1, hence\[V=2\times {{10}^{2\,}}\,c{{m}^{3}}\]. Note: The powers of ten are not counted as significant digits.
