Colchicine prevents the mitosis of the cells at which of the following stage ?

    A)  Anaphase

    B) Metaphase

    C) Prophase

    D) Interphase

    Correct Answer: B

    Solution :

Mitotic piosions are substances which inhibit cell division e.g., Azides, colchicine. Colchicine is an alkaloid, which is obtained from autum crocus (Colchicum autumnale). It arrests cell division at metaphase due to non-formation of spindle. So it induces polyploidy. Prophase is the longest phase of karyokinesis in which, chromatin fibreres condense and nuclear membrane and nucleolus becomes disappeared. Interphase, in this phase cell becomes prepared for division. Anaphase is the phase of shortest duration, in this phase division of centromere takes place.
