Which of the following alkenes is most reactive , towards cationic polymerization?

    A)  \[C{{H}_{2}}=CHC{{H}_{3}}\]

    B)  \[C{{H}_{2}}=CH-C{{H}_{2}}OH\]

    C)  \[C{{H}_{3}}-CO-C{{H}_{3}}\]

    D)  \[C{{H}_{2}}=CH-O-C{{H}_{3}}\]

    Correct Answer: C

    Solution :

In cationic polymerization, carbocations are formed. Greater the stability of the carbocation, more reactive is the alkene. Since, the stability of the intermediate carbocation follows the order \[C{{H}_{3}}-\overset{+}{\mathop{C}}\,H{{C}_{6}}{{H}_{5}}>C{{H}_{3}}-\overset{+}{\mathop{C}}\,HC{{H}_{3}}>\] \[C{{H}_{3}}-\overset{+}{\mathop{CH}}\,-Cl>C{{H}_{3}}-\overset{+}{\mathop{CHC{{O}_{2}}C{{H}_{3}}}}\,\] Therefore, reactivity decreases in the same order. Thus, styrene is most reactive.
