Tertiary alcohol \[\xrightarrow[reagent]{Lucas}\] reacts immediately reagent forming an oily layer in cold. Secondary alcohol \[\xrightarrow[reagent]{Lucas}\] reacts within 5-10 min Primary alcohol \[\xrightarrow[reagent]{Lucas}\] does not react appreciably in cold.
