The inner most layer of epidermis, stratum Malpighi constantly produces new cells which are pushed upward. These form the layer startum granulosum. As the cells of this layer are pushed outward and loses water, then became stratum lucidium which became more and more flattened untill the surface is reached and loses all water and became hard, perfectly flat, easiely detached, and almost dead. Such cell constitute stratum corneum. This layer is very thick in place of friction like sole and palm. This involve keratin protein.
