A gaseous hydrocarbon has 85% carbon and vapour density of 28. The possible formula of the hydrocarbon will be

    A)  \[H{{e}^{+}}\]

    B)  \[x\,c{{m}^{-1}}\]

    C)  \[4x\,c{{m}^{-1}}\]

    D)   \[\frac{x}{4}\,c{{m}^{-1}}\]

    Correct Answer: D

    Solution :

                    \[C:H=\frac{85}{12}:\frac{15}{1}=1:2\] \[\therefore \] Empirical formula \[=C{{H}_{2}}\] Empirical formula weight \[=12+2\times 1=14\] Mol. wt.  \[=2\times V.D.\] \[=2\times 28=56\] \[n=\frac{56}{14}=4\] Now, M.F. =n \[\times \] empirical formula                 \[=4\times C{{H}_{2}}\]                 \[={{C}_{4}}{{H}_{8}}\]
