Which of the following will exhibit highest boiling point?

    A)  \[C{{H}_{3}}C{{H}_{2}}OC{{H}_{2}}C{{H}_{3}}\]

    B)  \[C{{H}_{3}}C{{H}_{2}}C{{H}_{2}}C{{H}_{2}}C{{H}_{2}}OH\]

    C)  \[C{{H}_{3}}C{{H}_{2}}C{{H}_{2}}CH(C{{H}_{3}})OH\]

    D)  \[C{{H}_{3}}C{{H}_{2}}C{{(C{{H}_{3}})}_{2}}OH\]

    E)  \[C{{H}_{3}}C{{(C{{H}_{3}})}_{2}}C{{H}_{2}}H\]

    Correct Answer: B

    Solution :

The boiling point of alcohol is greater than ether due to presence of intermolecular hydrogen bonding. For isomeric alcohols having same number of carbon atoms the boiling points are in the order: primary > secondary > tertiary This is due to fact that with branching, the surface area decrease and therefore, van der WaaFs forces decrease, consequently boiling point      also      decreases.      Hence, \[C{{H}_{3}}C{{H}_{2}}C{{H}_{2}}C{{H}_{2}}C{{H}_{2}}OH\]will exhibit highest boiling point.
