Two moles of oxygen is mixed with eight moles of helium. The effective specific heat of the mixture at constant volume is

    A)  1.3R

    B)  1.4R

    C)  1.7 R

    D)  1.97R

    E)  1.2R

    Correct Answer: C

    Solution :

Let for mixture of gases, specific heat at constant volume be\[{{C}_{V}}\]. \[{{C}_{V}}=\frac{{{n}_{1}}{{({{C}_{V}})}_{1}}+{{n}_{2}}{{({{C}_{V}})}_{2}}}{{{n}_{1}}+{{n}_{2}}}\] where for oxygen; \[{{C}_{{{V}_{1}}}}=\frac{5R}{2},{{n}_{1}}=2\,mol\] For helium; \[{{C}_{{{V}_{2}}}}=\frac{3R}{2},{{n}_{2}}=8\,mol\] Therefore,                 \[{{C}_{V}}=\frac{\frac{2\times 5R}{2}+8\times \frac{3R}{2}}{2+8}\]                 \[=\frac{17R}{10}=1.7R\]
