  • question_answer
Two capacitors of capacitance \[{{C}_{1}}\]and \[{{C}_{2}}\]are charged to potentials \[{{V}_{1}}\]and \[{{V}_{2}}\]respectively. When they are connected in parallel the ratio of their respective charges will be:

    A)  \[\frac{{{C}_{1}}}{{{C}_{2}}}\]

    B)  \[\frac{{{C}_{1}}^{2}}{{{C}_{2}}^{2}}\]

    C)  \[\frac{{{V}_{1}}}{{{V}_{2}}}\]

    D)  \[\frac{{{V}_{1}}^{2}}{{{V}_{2}}^{2}}\]

    Correct Answer: A

    Solution :

Given : Capacitances of capacitors are \[{{C}_{1}}\]and \[{{C}_{2}}\]and potentials of the capacitors are \[{{V}_{1}}\]and \[{{V}_{2}}\] When the capacitors are connected in parallel then potential is same across each capacitors, but the charges are different. As it is from the formula for the charge on a capacitor is given by \[Q=CV\propto C\] Hence,    \[\frac{{{Q}_{1}}}{{{Q}_{2}}}=\frac{{{C}_{1}}}{{{C}_{2}}}\]
