In a germinating seed when protein is aerobically oxidized, the R.Q. value will be:

    A)  more than one

    B)  less than one

    C)  one

    D)  zero

    Correct Answer: B

    Solution :

Respiratory Quotient (R.Q) \[=\frac{\text{number of C}{{\text{O}}_{\text{2}}}\text{ molecules evolved}}{\text{number of }{{\text{O}}_{\text{2}}}\text{ molecules absorbed}}\] (i)when proteins respire, the value of RQ is less than one. (ii) when fat respire, the value of RQ is less than one. (iii) when carbohydrate respire, the value of RQ is unity (i.e., 1). (iv) when organic acids respire, the value of RQ is more than one. (v) when incomplete oxidation of carbohydrates takes place, the value of RQ is zero (vi) when   anaerobic   oxidation   of carbohydrate takes place, the value of RQ is infinite.
