Bhopal gas tragedy of 1984 was caused by the leakage of gas:

    A)  methyl isocyanate

    B)  2,4-dichlorophenoxy acetic acid

    C)  ammonia

    D)  hydrogen cyanide

    Correct Answer: A

    Solution :

Bhopal gas tragedy of   3rd December 1984 was caused by the leakage of methyl isocyanate gas (a chemical used for the synthesis of carbaryl i.e., a chemical pesticide) methyl isocyanate (MIC) is stored with phosgene to prevent its polymerisation. Addition of water triggers a reaction between \[{{H}_{2}}O\]and phosgene to produce HCl which in turn catalyzes polymerisation of MIC and production of carbaryl.
