The sunlight penetrating the atmosphere warms the earths surface. The earth surface reradiates the heat (infrared wavelengths) to the atmosphere and some escapes into space. Green-house gases and water vapour absorb some infrared wavelengths and reradiate part of them towards the earth. When green-house gases build up in the atmosphere, more heat is trapped near the earths surface.
